Most consumers believe candy is part of a healthy diet

Below is a re-print from NCA’s Candy & Snack TODAY magazine about the new shopper research being prepared by NCA. Attitudes about health and wellness were among the points covered with the 1,500 survey respondents.

More than half of consumers will eat chocolate and non-chocolate candy in moderation when considering healthy eating strategies and agree that confections can be part of a healthy diet, according to NCA Sweet Insights inaugural custom shopper research.

Of the 1,500 consumers surveyed, 57 percent say reducing the frequency of consumption of chocolate, eating smaller portions and switching to portion-control options is the best tactic for healthy eating strategies. Nearly 60 percent chose moderation tactics for their approach to healthy eating regarding non-chocolate candy.

Regarding chocolate, 26 percent chose swapping it for a healthier version or switching to healthy foods that are chocolate-flavored as their top strategy, while 22 percent chose the same strategy for non-chocolate candy. Seven percent said they wouldn’t give up non-chocolate candy and 11 percent said they refused to eliminate chocolate from their diet, while six percent said they would. Thirteen percent were willing to eliminate non-chocolate candy to facilitate a healthy diet.

On a scale of one to 10 — one being completely disagree and 10 being completely agree — 18 percent of consumers chose five on the scale when considering whether or not non-chocolate candy can be part of a healthy diet. About 14 percent completely agree chocolate can be part of a healthy diet and five percent completely disagree, while nearly eight percent completely disagree that candy and sweets can be part of a healthy diet.

The survey found 93 percent of individuals hold themselves responsible for a healthy diet, while just two percent hold the government responsible.

Do these results mimic your own feelings about candy’s role in a healthy diet? Do you choose moderation tactics like adjusting your frequency or potion sizes to maintain a healthy lifestyle while still indulging in chocolate and candy?
